Vitiligo (white patches)
Introduction:
Vitiligo or lukoderma is a pigmentation disorder. Mainly skin and mucous membranes are affected. Mainly the autoimmune disorders and hypothyroidism is considered one of the predisposing factors in these patients. The affected lesions are white or hypo pigmented with sharp margins. The site of previous trauma is also often encountered in clinical practice.
Ayurveda View:
In Ayurveda vitiligo is mentioned as “shvitraroga”. All samhitas of Ayurveda have mentioned this disorder. This is of three types and not an infectious disease. Hereditary plays a crucial role in this problem. It was assumed to be due to toxins in the blood that are produced due to faulty dietary habits. Taking viruddhaaharai. e. incompatible food like fish and milk is the main causes behind building toxins in the body that disturb the pigment cells leading to vitiligo or white patches. Ayurveda has also described that this condition can occur due to burn and trauma too.
Treatment
Ayurveda recommends blood purification and detoxification therapies to get rid of this vitiligo problem. Many herbal preparations are also available for the same purpose. Local application of herbal preparation to stimulate normal pigmentation is also encouraged.
