Rheumatoid arthritis
Introduction:
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic multi organ autoimmune problem. It means that chronic inflammation causes the damage to joint and multiple organs in this disease. This problem usually starts in middle aged women with fever, fatigue, joint pain, joint swelling and stiffness. There is progressive degeneration of joint structures and stiffness increases gradually. The muscles, lymph nodes, heart and skin is also involved.
Ayurveda View:
Aamvata is the medical term for so called Rheumatoid arthritis. Ayurveda science had knowledge about its nature and involvement of other organs like heart by this disease. It has been considered to be as a result of ama or toxin buid up in the body which aggravate vata and accumulate in the joint space and also circulate in the body causing many other symptoms.
Treatment:
Rheumatoid arthritis (amavata) line of treatment is to digest the ama or toxins in the body and pacify the vata with medicines. Fasting, light food and deepan herbs helpin digestion of toxins. If more toxins are present them detoxification is carried out. The vata pacifying medicines are also prescribed to alleviate the symptoms of pain and spasm (stiffness).
