Infertility
Introduction:
Infertility means failure to conceive even after 1 year of marriage (unprotected intercourse). Both males and females have some abnormality which can cause infertility. In females the major causes are hormonal disturbances, anatomical defects of the reproductive system, some serious debilitating medical illness or infections.
In males the genetic defects, hormonal disturbances, injury and infections of the reproductive system are mainly responsible for the infertility. Obesity is one of the major emerging concerns in moth males and females increasing the incidence of infertility.
Ayurveda View:
Ayurveda considers four basic factors for fertility. They are healthy sperm, healthy ovum, healthy uterus and the nourishment.
Any disturbance in sperms, ovum, uterus and the nutrition may lead to infertility known as bandhyatva in Ayurveda. Reproductive health of both men and women depend upon the shukradhatu and the proper nutrition is essential for its nourishment. Thus Ayurveda recommends rasayana (rejuvenating) and vajikaran (aphrodisiac) chikitsa (treatment) for these types of disorders.
